Heritage & Historical Significance

Teatro Colón was initially founded in 1857 but the current building, inaugurated on May 25, 1908, stands as a symbol of Buenos Aires' golden era. The construction, which took nearly 20 years, faced numerous setbacks, including the death of its original architect, Francesco Tamburini. His plans were carried on by his student, Vittorio Meano, who was later murdered. The project was then handed over to Belgian architect Jules Dormal who completed the design. Over the years, the theatre has welcomed some of the world's most celebrated artists, including Maria Callas, Plácido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, and Rudolf Nureyev. It has also played a significant role in the cultural life of Buenos Aires, and continues to do so today.
